Good sign for Wire Expo 2008: exhibits sold out, 6 more booths added
The floor plan for Wire Expo 2008, which recently sold out, has been adjusted to fit in a half dozen more booths. More than 250 exhibiting companies will be showcasing their technology and services on June 9-11, 2008, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

New Ferrous Wire Handbook to be introduced at Wire Expo 2008
Attendees at Wire Expo 2008 in Pittsburgh will have the first opportunity to see and buy the WAI’s new Ferrous Wire Handbook, a comprehensive book that replaces the existing two-part handbook that was published in 1989. Click here for more.

Mexican ferrous wiredrawing workshop planned for May 15
The Mexican Wire Association (ANTAAC) and WAI are putting on a day-long ferrous workshop designed for managers and supervisors directly connected with wiredrawing operations at the Hotel Camino Real Aeropuerto in Mexico City, Mexico.

Spring has officially arrived, which means that Wire Expo 2008 cannot be too far away, so now is a good time to see what events will be going on and to plan accordingly. Draka to close Vigo plant in Spain
Citing a migration of its auto customers, Draka has announced that it plans to close its plant in Viso, Spain, that is part of its Automotive & Aviation division. The Cable Directory reported that the company was reacting to “Draka’s important automotive customers (Tier 1 harness suppliers) in Spain … relocating their production facilities to low labor cost countries in North Africa and Eastern Europe …” The closing of the plant, which has about a hundred employees, will proceed after the Works’ Council and the Labor Authority about the legal grounds for the aforementioned close down.

Sam Dong opens plants in Tennessee
Sam Dong Co. Ltd. reports that it has officially opened its first U.S. plant, an 80,000-sq-ft plant in Rogersville, Tennessee, that makes specialty wire. Click here for more.

CommScope to close Brazil facility
CommScope, Inc., reported that it plans to close its Jaguariuna, Brazil, broadband facility as part of its goal to eliminate redundancy and reduce costs. Click here for more.

Belden to lay off 135 Richmond employees

Belden Inc. is laying off 135 workers at its plant in Richmond, Indiana, the location of its main North American operations. The news follows a recent announcement that the company will close its plant in Connecticut. Click here for more.


AMETEK Specialty Metal Products (SMP) has named Peter Hoctor as Regional Sales Manager for Europe. He will be responsible for sales and marketing of AMETEK's full line of specialty metal products.

Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company, has named Mike Connaughton, RCDD, as the Fiber Product Business Manager, responsible for managing all the company's optical fiber LAN product activities, as well as participating in the global Nexans Operational Product Management team.

Lenze-AC Tech has named Jim Craig as its new Director of Engineering. He will direct all new product design, development and sustaining engineering activities at the company's facility in Uxbridge, Massachusetts.
