We are facing lot of dust generation while making the strip Please give me probable cause.

Could you please give us some more information because we cannot see what you see or know what you know.

a) Is this a rolling process?
i) - How wide is the tape after rolling?
ii) - What thickness is it after rolling?
iii) - Is it annealed after rolling?

b) Is this pure, soft, electrolytic (ETP) copper, oxygen free copper, reclaimed "pure" copper or some type of copper alloy?

c) Where is the dust coming from?
i) - The surface of the tape after rolling?
ii) - The edges of the tape during the shearing process?

b) Are you using rotary shears to trim and cut the tape?
i) - Is the tape cleaned before shearing?
ii) - How is it cleaned and with what (Such as boiling water and steam or say boiling perchloroethylene and steam)?
iii) - How and how often do you sharpen the shears?
iv) - What is the criteria you use to know that the shears have been properly sharpened?

i) - How wide is the tape after rolling? The width varies from 3/4 to 1.5 inches.
ii) - What thickness is it after rolling? Thickness - 2.0 - 3 mm (0.079 to 0.118 inches).
iii) - Is it annealed after rolling? Yes.

b) Is this pure, soft, electrolytic (ETP) copper, oxygen free copper, reclaimed "pure" copper or some type of copper alloy? We are using ETP copper rod of different diameters.

c) Where is the dust coming from?
i) - The surface of the tape after rolling? On the surface and at the edges also.
ii) - The edges of the tape during the shearing process? No shearing is done only edging is done.

b) Are you using rotary shears to trim and cut the tape?
i) - Is the tape cleaned before shearing? NA.
ii) - How is it cleaned and with what (Such as boiling water and steam or say boiling perchloroethylene and steam)? NA.
iii) - How and how often do you sharpen the shears? NA.
iv) - What is the criteria you use to know that the shears have been properly sharpened? NA.

A couple of more questions that would help:

1) Are you rolling the strip while it is dry?

2) Is the ETP rod used as is from the mill or has it been shaved?

3) You say that the rod is soft, does that mean soft as it came from the rod mill or was it annealed prior to rolling?

4) What is the final use of this strip?

5) Are you flattening it in a single pass?

6) Your W(idth) to T(hickness) varies from about 10:1 to about 20:1 worse case which seems like a lot of variation without an intermediate anneal, so you are annealing after rolling but are you doing any annealing as a strip but before the final size?

7) How many mill stands do you have?

Are your edges full radius?

9) Do you have an edging stand or two?

Thank you for your answers to our initial questions. These pointed the way for Spectre07 (Richard) to become involved. He is a magnet wire specialist and that includes rectangular shapes so he is well familiar with the rolling, edging and the annealing of rectangular wire.

It is indeed to your benefit to respond to his 9 more precise questions.

I believe we both clearly understand your problem and possibly the solution but a little focus is necessary. Thank you for providing us with that information.

2) Is the ETP rod used as is from the mill or has it been shaved? - ETP rod first drawn to required size. No shaving

3) You say that the rod is soft, does that mean soft as it came from the rod mill or was it annealed prior to rolling? - Soft as it comes from rod mill with an UTS (Ultimate Tensile Strength) of 235 N/mm2. (34,084 psi)

4) What is the final use of this strip? - Enameling and CTC (Continuously Transposed Cable Copper)

5) Are you flattening it in a single pass? - No

6) Your W(idth) to T(hickness) varies from about 10:1 to about 20:1 worse case which seems like a lot of variation without an intermediate anneal, so you are annealing after rolling but are you doing any annealing as a strip but before the final size? - No

7) How many mill stands do you have?- 3 flattening and one edging. The dust generally pops up during edging.

Are your edges full radius? - No

9) Do you have an edging stand or two? - One
