Miller to guide Wire Association in 2013

Richard MillerMillerGUILFORD, Connecticut, USA – January 2, 2013 – The Wire Association International (WAI), Inc. announces the appointment of Richard R. Miller as president of the association for a one-year term that commenced on January 1, 2013. Miller will serve as chairman of the Board of Directors and as the 59th president of the 83-year-old association, which is headquartered in Guilford, Connecticut, USA.

Miller, who has been a part of an association-wide initiative to increase WAI membership, is committed to continue the momentum of recent growth, which has resulted in hundreds of new members representing both industry manufacturers and suppliers. "If you work in the wire and cable industry, you should have a willingness to support your industry association and help grow WAI membership. It's about participating in your profession," said Miller.

A WAI member since 1996, Miller has served on the Association's Board of Directors, its executive committee, and on multiple committees including member relations, conference programming, and paper awards.

Miller is Senior Vice President at Southwire Company in Carrollton, Georgia, USA, where he began his career 37 years ago. During his tenure he has held numerous positions in engineering, materials management, and plant management at various Southwire locations. Prior to 2012 he was Senior Vice President of Electrical Manufacturing, responsible for 12 Southwire manufacturing plants.

He was instrumental in developing the nationally recognized 12 for Life program—a partnership between Southwire Company and the Carroll County School System—to reduce the high school drop-out rate by allowing at-risk students to work in a manufacturing plant designed for students while earning credit toward a high school diploma.

His other notable accomplishments include receiving the 1994 Southwire H.A. Case Technological Achievement Award and the 1998 Southwire D.B. Cofer Enterprise Award. Miller holds a B.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering Technology from Southern Technical Institute and also holds several Southwire patents.

A leader in technology and innovation, Southwire Company is one of North America's largest wire and cable producers. Southwire and its subsidiaries manufacture building wire and cable, metal-clad (MC) cable, FlatWire Ready® products, cord products (including Tappan™ sound, security and communication cables through Tappan Wire & Cable Inc.), utility cable products, industrial power cable, OEM wire products, copper and aluminum rod, and continuous casting technology. Southwire also supplies MAXIS® wire and cable installation tools to the commercial, industrial, and utility construction markets.

The Wire Association International, Inc. is governed by a network of volunteers from around the world. Joining Miller for the 2013 term will be members of the association's 2013 executive committee: First Vice President, William A. Avise, Leggett & Platt Inc.; Second Vice President, William F. Reichert, Champlain Cable Corp.; Executive Committee Member Anthony R. De Rosa, Cortinovis Machinery America Inc.; and Immediate Past President Nicholas Nickoletopoulos, Sivaco Wire Group.

WAI, founded in 1930, is a not-for-profit association with 2,240 individual members in 60 countries around the globe. The association serves the educational needs of the wire and cable manufacturing industry through a variety of products and services. WAI manages the Interwire Trade Exhibition and the WAI Operations Summit & Wire Expo and publishes the Wire Journal International, Wire Journal International Reference Guide, and WIRE BULLETIN through subsidiary operations.
