Stranding dies design & cooling system was created by Archived Forum Admin
Hello

Please give me the guideline for the specification & standard formula for the stranding die design for the round compacted aluminum conductor with 96% to 97% compaction of 7,19,37,61 no of wires & also give a suggestion for the best cooling system for the compact dies. Presently we are using methyl alcohol sprayed on the compact dies & entry bell for the conductors

Hello PatelCab,

The first thing I must discuss is safety because the evaporation of methyl alcohol to cool a die is very dangerous.

Operator inhalation of the vapor is harmful and above the flash point (12C or 54F) the vapor is explosive within certain flammable limits in air. See www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/M2015.htm

Spraying methyl alcohol into the entry bell would also in my opinion remove any trace drawing lubricant from the aluminum strands and increase the friction between the surface of the strands and the die itself. This by itself would create more frictional heat. Some actually slow drip in an extremely small amount of oil on a cloth on the wires at the closing bell. The oil of course must not promote environmental stress cracking if the conductor is to be insulated with polyethylene.

We used water cooling jackets on our closing/ compacting die holders.

Now, as far as stranding dies are concerned, I suggest you go over to the "WAI Virtual Trade Show" www.wirenet.org/vts/vts_search.cfm

Under "Product(s)" , select "Dies - Stranding" and click the "Submit Query" button. There are 45 companies from all over the world that sell stranding dies. We suggest that you contact three or four and get them to give you their latest advice. If you don't like what they tell you, then contact others.
