TOPIC: Hydraulic Cutter for Cable cutting

Hydraulic Cutter for Cable cutting 2 years 9 months ago #277

Hello all,

I just joined this forum and I'm an engineer from a cable manufacturer in Malaysia.

I have a problem cutting 100mm diameter Armored Cable. Could somebody tell me the recommend tools for this process?

Thanks for help....

Hello there,

We never used hydraulic cutters to cut cables like this. Instead we used a custom (home made) pull down type rotary saw with a special saw blade on the arm as recommended by a saw blade representative. The cable rides across a machined base with a slot in it to accommodate the blade. If there is no jacket over the armor, you must strongly tape the spot where you intend to make the cut. You may even have to reinforce the tape with steel wire on each side of the spot where you intend to cut the cable. Tightly clamp the cable on both sides of the saw blade before cutting.

Experiment, be very careful, wear gloves and safety glasses.

It actually worked very well.

hello Mr. Vettecoupe,

Thanks for your reply, but I'm still blurry about it.
Can you send me a few photos?

Thanks.

Hello again,

A heavy duty radial arm saw will work just as well but you will have to modify the platen so you can completely cut through the cable and hold the cable tightly down.
As before, a special saw blade is required.

Make sure the saw is well fastened to the plant floor,

I have also been advised that BAIER circular saw pipe cutters have been used with great success but I personally have no experience with this application.
