The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. SJE

Designation for cord like SJ, but made with TPE.

SJEOW

Designation for hard service thermoplastic or rubber-insulated conductors and oil resistant thermoplastic outer jacket. All elastomer construction. 300V, 90°C to 105°C (194°F to 221°F). Weather resistant. Meets UL specifications.

SJEW

Designation for hard service thermoplastic or rubber-insulated conductors and overall thermoplastic jacket. All elastomer construction. 300V, 90°C to 105°C (194°F to 221°F). Weather resistant. Meets UL specifications.

SJO

Designation for conductor like SJ, but with carolprene, oil-resistant compound outer jacket. Can also be made water-resistant. 300V, 60°C (140°F).

SJO Cord

An oil-resistant flexible cord of medium duty, rubber insulated and neoprene jacket, which is manufactured for constant service where frequent flexing is required or stationary service where equipment is not moved.

SJOO

Designation for conductor like SJO, but with inner conductor insulation and outer jacket that are oil resistant.

SJOOW-A

Designation for conductor like SJOO, but with weather and sunlight resistant jacket.

SJOW

Designation for conductor like SJO, but CSA Certified for water resistance.

SJOW-A

Designation for conductor like SJO, but with weather- and sunlight-resistant jacket. (“W-A,” the former UL Listing for weather resistance, was scheduled to be replaced by “W” when UL and CSA harmonization occurred in June 1998).

SJT

Designation for junior hard service thermoplastic or rubber-insulated conductors with overall thermoplastic jacket. 300V, 60°C to 105°C (140°F to 221°F).

SJT Cord

Cords used for vacuum cleaners, motors or washing machines, portable tools such as electric drills, where mechanical wear could be a condition of operation. These cords consist of two or more strands of conductors with a serving between the copper and the insulation to prevent fine strands from sticking to the insulation. Fillers are twisted together with the conductors to make a round assembly.

SJTO

Designation for conductor like SJT, but oil-resistant thermoplastic outer jacket. 60°C (140°F).

SJTO Cord

Plastic service cord furnished with oil resistant neutral gray color jacket. It is also available in yellow color jacket for greater visibility. These cords are designed to resist the effects of oil, grease and various solvents.

SJTOO

Designation for conductor like SJTO, but with oil resistant thermoplastic insulation and jacket.

SJTW

Designation for hard usage thermoplastic or rubber-insulated conductors and overall thermoplastic jacket. 300V, 60°C to 105°C (140°F to 221°F). Weather resistant for outdoors use.

Skein

A reinforced length of wire that is wound around the tabs/tags on a coil to reduce the likelihood of breakage and stretch in the wire. The coil wire ends are reinforced by folding a number of strands together, twisting them into a braid and securing them to the coil.

Skeleton Braid

A braid of widely separated wires (copper or steel) or fibers that are used to hold the core together, for reinforcing a jacket or serve as shielding for electrostatic/electromagnetic fields.

Skim Tape

Tape coated on one or both sides with a thin film of uncured rubber or synthetic compound to produce a coating suitable for vulcanization.

Skimming Machine

1) A machine used for removing defective surface from bar or wire. 2) The name a machine for polishing the center part of a needle by means of an emery-coated roller.

Skin Effect

The tendency of alternating current flow to concentrate at the surface of a conductor. The tendency increases as does the frequency, and the current density decreases from the surface of the conductor toward its center. The skin effect is important since it affects the surface-to-core temperature uniformity. See Current Penetration Depth.
