The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Torque Control

Device used to control the wire tension by adjusting the torque on the reel shafts.

Torque Test

A test designed to ascertain the stiffness of a material under given environmental conditions.

Torquing

Applying a rotating force and measuring or limiting its value.

Torsion

Twisting action that causes shear stresses and strains.

Torsion Spring

A helical coiled spring designed to give an angular deflection of its ends about its longitudinal axis when subjected to an external load.

Torsion Test

A test where a length of wire is twisted on its own axis in one direction until it breaks to determine the ductility of wire in twisting. Wire undergoing this test must withstand the number of torsions or twists specified for that quality without fracture, splitting or other defect. A form of the test is used to determine modulus of rigidity, yield point and elastic limit stresses in torsion and shear stress. It is also known as the Twisting Test.

Torsional Properties

Figures expressing values of a material when stressed by twisting.

Torsional Strength

The resistance of a bar to twisting. Closely related to its shear strength.

Total Carbon

The sum of the free and combined carbon (including carbon in solution) in a ferrous alloy.

Total L/D Ratio

In an extruder, the ratio of the distance from the rear edge of the feed opening to the forward end of the barrel bore divided by the bore diameter and expressed as a ratio wherein the diameter is reduced to one such as 15:1 or 20:1.

Tough Pitch Copper

Refined copper in which the oxygen content has been adjusted to between about 0.02 and 0.08 percent. It is at least 99.5 percent pure. Tough pitch copper has a minimum electrical conductivity of 100 percent IACS.

Tough Rubber Sheathing

A sheath of rubber compound specially formulated and applied to provide an extremely tough protection which is waterproof and resistant to decay, mechanical abrasion, acids, alkalis and other corrosive materials.

Toughness

Resistance to impact. It is a combination of strength and ductility and the property of absorbing considerable energy before fracture. It is usually represented by the area under a stress-strain curve.

Town Gas

Burnt ions gas as obtained by the partial combustion of the ordinary town gas supply, is suitable as a protective atmosphere for heat treatment of plain low carbon steels. For high carbon and alloy steels and most nonferrous metals, it is also suitable, if dried, and the sulfur content is reduced.

TP

Designation for: 1) Tin Plate. 2) Parallel tinsel cord. All rubber insulation and jacket over two extremely flexible conductors. Light duty, attached to appliances of 50W or less. For use in damp places in lengths of less than 3 meters.

TP-PMD

Designation for Twisted Pair, Physical Media Dependent, a data network protocol.

TPA

Designation for a 125V, 400°C (752°F) wire. It is constructed with a stranded tinned conductor, glass braid or tape, impregnated felted asbestos and asbestos braid.

TPC

Designation for Triple Paper Covered.

TPE

Designation for Thermoplastic Elastomer.

TPER

Designation for thermal plastic rubber.
