The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Twist

The rotation of a wire or cable around its axis.

Twist Guide

Guide used to prevent twisting of the rod as it is moving from one rolling stand to another, particularly critical at high speeds.

Twist Test

See Torsion Test.

Twisted Pair

A cable composed of two small insulated conductors twisted together without a common covering. Two insulated conductors, twisted together and coded.

Twisted Triad

Any three individually insulated conductors that are twisted together.

Twisted Tube

Tube that has been twisted and has a symmetrical cross-section and nominally uniform wall thickness.

Twisting Test

Another name for the Torsion Test.

Two-High Mill

A rolling stand with only two rolls. Some two-high mills are reversing with screw-downs to adjust the rolls. Others are one-way only and may or may not have screw-downs for roll adjustment and may or may not be a part of a continuous mill.

Two-Minute Wire

Galvanized wire that will withstand immersion in a neutral copper sulfate solution for two minutes.

Two-Phase Circuit

A polyphase circuit of three to five conductors in which the alternating current between any two selected pairs of conductors, other than a neutral if one exists, have the same periods, are equal in amplitude and have a phase difference of 90 degrees. Although 4-wire and 5-wire two-phase circuits are commonly called “two-phase circuits,” they could more properly be called four-phase circuits.

Two-Stage Extruder

See Extruder, Two Stage.

Two-Wheel Configuration

Configuration of a wheel-and-belt continuous casting machine where two wheels are used to form the mold for the pouring process.

Tyer

Automatic tying machine for binding of the finished coil.

U-Bend Test

See Test, U-Bend.

UD

Designation for underground distribution.

UF

Designation for underground feeder and branch circuit cable, thermoplastic insulated, 60°C (140°F), wet and dry locations, including direct burial.

UG

Designation for Universal Government. A two-letter designation that precedes the number on connectors for coaxial cable.

UHF

Designation for Ultra-High Frequency. A frequency in the band between 300 and 3,000 Mhz.

UL

Designation for Underwriters’ Laboratories, a non-profit independent organization, which operates a listing service for electrical and electronic materials and equipment. (Canadian counterpart is CSA).

UL Approved

A product that has been tested and approved to Underwriters Laboratories’ standards.
